Japan week #14

Heeeeellloo!
I trust everyone is doing well and dandy. :) I've had an AMAZING week. We had SO MUCH FUN. It was also probably my hardest week yet in the mission field too. I'll tell you all about it. OH! But first, MEGAN! I love you! JOSH! Elder Lee is super excited to get a beanie from you! He said he'll wear it everyday of his mission, even in the summer! He said he'd write you a letter too when he gets it. BY THE WAY! The scarf you made for me, I LOVE IT! It's SO WARM, and I wear it everyday. :) DAD and MOM! So you may notice that I spent sixty bucks out of my debit card, that was for an electronic dictionary I found on a SCREAMING good deal, and so to make my language study better, particularly my study of the writing system, I grabbed it, sorry. :P
SO! This week was a hoot! Last p day I took Elder Lee around to some places close to our apartment to check the area out a bit. We ended up biking up this massive mountain, and then hiked all over it in the down-pouring rain. :P And what sucks, is that RIGHT after that, we got on the bikes to go back home, and the rain stopped. >.> Darn weather! That night though we dendoed in an area that I love, and we found a man named Toshihiro. And we had a great time talking to him about the gospel. He rejected us hardcore right from the start, but we started talking to him about his paintings that he makes, and he kept talking to us. And then little by little we kept adding in bits of the gospel and he was cool with it. He told us that it was way rare that he was talking to us about stuff like this. It was WAY cool, we set up an appointment with him for tonight, and we're going back. He gave us a bunch of apples too, which is HUGE. Fruit here is CRAZY expensive. Like, an apple is almost 2 bucks. ONE apple. We were stoked. :)
Tuesday was rocking awesome as well. We had a lesson with Yano San, our newest investigator, and we taught the restoration and the book of Mormon and that stuff. And it went really well, and the spirit was strong. And at the end of the lesson I invited her to be baptized once she new our message was true. That was my first time ever inviting someone to be baptized, it's kinda rare out here sometimes, and so I was a tad nervous, but I was just like, this is what you need, this is what will bless you and your two daughters. It was epic, but she said she didn't want to at the moment. Didn't want to make a date, but that's ok. We'll be seeing her again, she has a lot of interest in the gospel. :)
Wednesday was where our week starts getting really hard. We went to visit an inactive member. But we found his son at home who is in his 40's or so. And he was A JERK! He's goes to the Sokugakai Buddhist sect. Basically Buddhism's Jehovah's Witnesses. And he told us he doesn't want us talking to his dad, even though we ALREADY have, and he wouldn't let us talk to him then, made us a little frustrated since he was being WAY rude to us. In Japanese there's a polite form of speech, an informal form of speech, and a rude form. He was only using the rude form. We weren't happy, had to go calm down after that. Imagine being talked to like a dog, that's Japanese rude form. So after that we do some finding, no luck there, everyone is just way mean to us. And so we head to our appointment that night with an investigator, Takaishi San. It was his birthday, so we made him an apple pie, and had a great time with him. We had a great gospel discussion, and we invited him to be baptized, but he said he doesn't want to make a date yet, so we're going to have to work on him a little longer. But that's ok. :)
Thursday, was a HARD day. We had no appointments, so we were just out tracting all day, in the DOWN-POURING rain. And EVERYONE was rejecting us hard core, they'd hear us say we're missionaries, and they'd immediately reject us, and be way rude about it too. It was just a draining day. We were cold, getting yelled at, and didn't have any good work come from it. But to make up for it, we made a mini apple pie with some left over apple stuff, and we practiced for our talent show act. So there was a ward talent show on Saturday. And we didn't know about it, till Monday. And we had NO IDEA what we were going to do. We ended up deciding to sing, You're playing with the big boys now, from the Prince of Egypt. And so we choreographed the whole song, and during am instrumental part in the middle, we choreographed a GLOW STICK IN THE DARK DANCE. And it was rocking awesome. I'll talk about that more later though, and so we had a fun night, and it made it all better. :)
Friday was just another hard day, nothing special, but Saturday was EPIC.
So Saturday was the talent show day. We had nothing special happen during dendo, but man the talent show was awesome. So people were doing regular stuff, instruments, dancing, singing, stuff like that. And it was awesome, but what made ours awesome, was the surprise factor. We had Sister Soderquist, sister missionary, man our lights for us. And so when the part came we disappeared into blackness. And we made sure that it was pitch black. We had our glow sticks hiding in our pockets, and when the lights went out we started our epic dance. People were yelling and laughing and just in a state of BLOWN MINDS, over the whole thing. No one has seen the missionaries be so like, in their faces, and that song was just a fun way to pretend that we were like that. It was way fun. And our dance went awesome! We basically did it flawlessly, and the Sister Soderquist was PERFECT on getting the lights back on, it just went PERFECT. SO MUCH fun. We kinda one upped everyone, pretty badly. :P But it was great. Gotta love imagination. :)
Sunday was a pretty normal day as well. Got a TON of apples from the ward, so we're going to make apple pie again, but just for us!! YOSHI! ;)
So that was my week, it was both EPIC, and way hard. But we had fun regardless. :) Elder Lee and I get along SO WELL. We're just laughing all day everyday, supporting each other, and just have a great time all the time. :) It's great! I LOVE HIM to death.

So, a couple things. I can't have you send beef jerky at the moment. Japan put an import ban on meat products from the USA and Canada due to some bovine disease outbreak or something, so hold off on that for awhile. :( I've also been compiling a list of things for Christmas, so I'll talk about that next week. OH! And I would love a bunch of pictures. Japanese people LOVE family stuff, and they love pictures. So could you guys maybe assemble a book of pictures from our lives. Just pics of us, doing what we do. Not just standard family picks, but like stuff from trips, dirt biking, tons of stuff like that too please! :) LOVE YOU ALL! Have a great week! Have fun!!

P.S. It's getting WAY cold, and yes, it has been snowing. Elder Lee is not excited. ;)

Japan week #13

Family! Minasan!
I'm glad to hear people are doing good. :) Sounds like everyone is doing great and having fun, makes me way happy. :)
So this has been a crazy week, with transfers and what not. It's been nuts. This last few days with Elder Harper was a blast, but also kinda sad. He's an awesome missionary, and a way fun guy to be with, but our time has come to an end. On Thursday we went to the Sapporo train station, about a 2 hour journey for us, and we met at the transfer spot. And it was WAY fun. We got to hang out with a bunch of missionaries for a while, and it was just way cool. And I got Elder Lee!! I met him my first transfer in Hakodate for our Zone Training Meeting, and I really liked him a ton. So when I got the call, I was WAY STOKED! I'm his very first junior too, he just went senior, so I'm still being the guinea pig. ;) But he's way good, and President Evans really likes him, so I have no worries about it. :) We got along really well. And we both want to work really hard, so we're very excited to work together. He's had some meh companions, and a particularly hard one last transfer who was not a very hard worker, and so he's very happy to be with me, because I'm just as dedicated as he is. He's a way good example to me, of a hard worker, of a great missionary, and a powerful teacher. We're going to see lots of miracles this transfer, and I'm way excited. :)
We've already, in just our few days together, have seen some great miracles. :) We've found a couple people to teach, and we've had some great teaching opportunities. We found a Yano San, who is way interested in the message, and she has two kids, so we're way stoked to be able to work with her. We also talked to a Toshihiro San last night, who told us that him talking to us was really rare. He usually flat out rejects missionaries way fast, but he felt something different about us, and was willing to talk to us and wants to see us again. :D He also is an epic painter / photographer, and he told us he'd teach us how to do it too! So we have some good things coming up. ;) We're working way hard, and loving it.
Our VERY first day together was CRAZY though!! It was epic!! We had just so many crazy things happen. We found two people that were way excited to hear about our message, and we were way excited! The first one though, after a great lesson, told us she wanted to meet with us again and learn more. But she's MOVING!!! She's lived here her entire life, in that house for nine, and RIGHT when she meets us, she's leaving! SO LAME! We went to visit a member right after that, and we had the funniest experience. This is an OLD woman, and she loves missionaries, and was way happy to see us. So we're talking to her, and a chunk of her TOOTH comes out, lands on her hand, and sticks. Elder Lee and I are like O.O Eww, but we don't say anything. And after a few minutes she puts the chunk of tooth BACK in her mouth!! :O We were like, OH GOSH THAT'S SO GROSS!!! We're trying to say good bye then, but she insists on giving us some bread. So we go in, and she just starts loading us up with bread, and we're saying, no that's enough! We REALLY don't need that much, and by the time BOTH our bags are full to the brim, she stops. We ask her if we can say a prayer before we leave, and so she kneels down to give it. But her radio is on in the background playing WAY loud, and guess what song is playing at this exact moment. YOU SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND BABY RIGHT ROUND!! AHHHHHAHHHHAHHH! Oh man... Elder Lee and I are just DYING during this prayer, and when she finally finishes, we say goodbye, run outside, and DIE! We were on the ground just laughing and freaking out about what just happened in that visit. :P It was so funny, and we didn't expect anything like that, so we died.
And not even ten feet had we walked past her house after laughing, this old guys yells at us, runs across the street, and asks us if we're american. We say yes, and then he just looks up and points at the sky. Doesn't say anything. Just looks at us, the ground, and back up at the sky, pointing. Elder Lee reaches up to a tree branch above our heads, and the old man flips out saying that's not it. Turns out he was trying to say crow. After we figure that out, he ignores us, runs across the street, and goes back to doing whatever he was doing. We were like, what just happened?  Had a ton of fun that day! :D
So yeah, I'm out of time, can't wait to hear from you again! Love you all!! I'll tell you more about Elder Lee next email, he's way cool, and he's lived ALL OVER the world. Singapore, currently. It's nuts!
Can't wait to get Josh's scarf!! WAY Stoked!! Elder Lee asked if Josh can make him a beanie. So if Josh is ok with that, Elder Lee wants a beanie. ;) Love you all!! Have fun this week!

Japan week #12

Konnichiwa minasan!!
I trust everyone is well and supa genki? :) I certainly hope so, and pray so. This week has been a blast, and it's like, almost guaranteed my last transfer with Elder Harper. :( Transfers are tomorrow, and boy is that a crazy feeling. This is like my first 'real' transfer. For training you almost always stay with you trainer and same area for two, so I wasn't so anxious about it then. But now that I'm 'done' training, ;) ANYTHING can happen. I could move, stay, get a new comp, stay with Elder Harper, who knows, I DON'T! So that's way exciting. And you won't know what happens till next week! Haha!! ;) It's gonna be great, whatever happens. I'm excited. I am WAY sad that this is likely my last couple days with Elder Harper. We've grown so close together, and I can't believe how much we've BOTH grown these last two transfers together. Our last weekly planning session got way real. He was giving me some last second advice, things he wanted me to remember, and it turned into quite the bromance session. It was great, we really do love each other. I'm gonna be WAY sad when he goes home and I'm still here! It's crazy how close you get to other missionaries out here. Even some of the guys in my zone that I've only seen twice I'm way attached to, we're all brothers in the faith and that really binds us together, it's really special.
So you may have heard, but there was a typhoon coming about the northern asian areas, and we got hit with some crazy weather this week. It's been mad, rain, and slight flooding, and other crazies, and we've been having to adapt to it. We had a whole day of work go because of the intense weather, it's nuts!! It should be past us now though, so hopefully we get back to normal weather. It's been getting much colder now too. It's way surprising to me because it's only Ooctober!! Got me some epic blue/black riding gloves for the bike to keep my hands warm and dry. My big winter gloves are too big really to ride, so I scored big finding those gloves for like 2 bucks. :D
So this week we couldn't meet with our investigators, everything was coming up so they couldn't see us, we were way bummed, but after this week, with hindsight, I think that was planned from up high. We've had some way cool non attending miracles this week that I don't think would've happened if we were riding way out every day to reach our investigators. So the first one was meeting a Brother Ogasawara. That's a CRAZY Japanese name by the way. Most names are way short. His is like, 4 kanji long. O.O Most are 2. It's crazy! He's an 80 year old man who was baptized in his teens, moved away from home, and hasn't seen anyone from, or had any contact with the church until we met him this week. For 60 years he lost contact with the church, and he long since went inactive because of that, and just us finding him was a miracle. We were looking for a different na (non-attending) in that area, and we just couldn't for the life of us find them. So we decided to just start housing, and we found him. :O CRAZY right? And his English is way good, and he loves missionaries, especially gaijins, (me) ;), so we had a great visit with him. Turns out his health has been declining a lot recently, and he's been very lonely, and our visiting him was way timely. He has been thinking about the church again and wants to come back, and then we show up on his door step to fellowship him!! :D Was way cool, and he LOVES ME. Contrast that to my gaijin powers scaring poor innocent women. ;) Haha!!
Our other big na miracle this week was visiting a Sister Shagotsu. We were having a rough day, we were late getting out the door, Harper crashed, broke his light, had to run to a nearby store to buy a new bike light, we were WAY behind schedule, and feeling way bad about it. But it turns out, that as we were going to this sister's house, that she got home at the EXACT time we showed up. So if we hadn't have had a crazy day, we would've missed her, and she had been praying for the missionaries to come visit her. She has had a crazy few years, her husband fell asleep while driving, while she was in the car, and ended up crashing and killing the mother of a young family, leaving the father and child alone, and she has been feeling a lot of guilt about it. Her husband had to do a year in prison because of it. And so she's been having some bouts of depression, and recently she was feeling very bad about it, and our showing up was way timely, because the spirit we felt together was way powerful, and she was a different person when we left. :) She has an AMAZING testimony still, we have no idea why she isn't active. She's in a part member family, that might be why.
Our halloween party was awesome as well. :) We had a great turn out, great food, and a great time. Had quite a few non members come, and the ward invited lots of their friends, and we had a blast. :) I dressed up as Santa Claus, and one of my favorite members, Isago Kyodai, dressed up as a member of kiss. Hence the epic Kiss picture together. ;) It was a way fun time. I think it was way successful. Mie san, one of the shimai's investigators came, and I think it was way good for her to associate with the members. It's weird having shimai, but they're way good, and Muroran is so ready for shimai again.
But yeah, thsoe are the more notable parts of this week. It's been a great one. :)
Today for p day, the bishop invited us to go to the onsen (hot springs) with him, his treat! So we called President Evans, and he said normally since we went last transfer, he'd say no, wait a bit longer, but because the bishop invited us, he said yes! So I get to go to the onsen again!! :D:D:D STOKED!! So yeah, great way to end this transfer. ;) You can't fully understand just the magicalness of the onsen until you experience. It's wonderful, I highly recommend it. ;)
OK! Some business, I need socks. :P My old socks that I took, I've destroyed. My toenails, EVEN SHORT, have cut through them all. I only have like 6 pairs of black socks. :P So maybe could you get me some black calf length athletic socks or something? Not dress socks? I just need something more durable. I could go for another pair or two of those thorlo socks as well momma! I have a list of things I've been thinking about asking for, but I don't have it on me so I can give you those next week. Some of those aren't super pressing too, so it's no big deal. OH! The music is EPIC!!"! I LOVE IT! Elder Harper does too, it's way epic. Thank you so much! OH! I could go for another pair of nylon garments, that'd be nice. And I'm WAY good on hygiene stuff, I don't think I'll ever run out. ;) I'll let you know when I need stuff! Thanks guys! I love you all so much, have a great week!1
